A few things the 9-3 does better:

I have a 9-3, and am contemplating getting a 9-5. I've rented a 9-5 a couple of times, and found a few things lacking:
1. On the 9-3, the gas filler door locks and unlocks with the driver's door. Thus, when you exit the car to pump the gas, the filler is always accessible. On the 9-5, you have to push a button to open the filler door. You have to remember to push the button before you exit the car. But worse, if you accidentally push the button, you have to get out to close the filler door!
2. On the 9-3, when you push the hatchback release button on the driver's door, it unlocks the hatchback, but does not actually open it. When you are outside the car, you can squeeze the release lever and open the unlocked hatch. But on the 9-5 sedan, the trunk release button actually opens the trunk lid. So, if you accidentally push the release button on the driver's door or on the key, you have to exit the car to close the trunk! And, it is easy to push the wrong button on the key. (The 9-5 wagon works sensibly like the 9-3. Pushing the release button only unlocks the tailgate.)
3. The 9-3 has height adjustable shoulder belts. The 9-5 does not. This feature is useful for us short folks.
4. The 9-3 has a "mute" button on the radio (it also pauses CD's.) The 9-5 doesn't have this useful feature.
5. There are too many "blank" switches on the 9-5 dash!!!!!
All in all, though, the 9-5 is a very nice car, and I look forward to getting one.
