I've been wondering about the unlit steering wheel ever since I took delivery of my 2001 Aero last November. I've owned a VW Passat, and have a '00 BMW 540i and both have steering wheel pushbuttons that are lit. I thought the SAAB had an electrical defect! But I much prefer the lit buttons. I think this has to be filed away as SAAB quirkiness rather than a "safety" feature.
Since we're on the topic of quirkiness, I've never owned or driven a car in my life where using electricity in the car causes the headlights to dim, which occurs in the SAAB. The worst offender is using the power windows, which causes a very apparent dimming effect on the headlights -- might be another "safety" feature where you can flash oncoming traffic by using the power window switches -- eh?
Last gripe: body/chassis creaks and flexes a bit over driveways if approached at an angle. Overall, still a fun car to drive.
