and, if I recall, he has written that design limitations and possibly poor machining of oil pumps means that some 4 cylinder 9-5s develop sludge even with frequent fully synthetic oil changes. Driving conditions play a very important role. The PCV upgrade does not resolve all of these variables in all cases, but it has seemed to reduce the frequency of sludge, when combined with proper maintanence, and perhaps other manufacturer changes. For example, Saab seems to have clamped down on the quality control of oil pump machining, and didn't they increase the oil capacity from '04 forward?
The bottom line is, unfortunately, you have to be really careful when buying a used 4 cylinder 9-5, '99 to '03. If there is a sludge problem, Saab probably will not help you without proper service records.
