The other day, a poster mentioned buying his 9-5 at a dealer auto auction. I've heard that dealer auctions are the best bet for a low price on a car. It's buying wholesale. Problem is, they're for dealers.
I've also heard that the way around the license problem is to ID someone with a dealer license and pay them to buy you a car. When I diplomatically try to open this topic with a dealer, they suddenly get a bad case of lock jaw, assuring me that they can get me the car I want if I don't like what's on the lot.
On the other hand, I once mentioned to a dealer that a competitor's advertising promised "the best" used Saabs. "Ha," he scoffed. "They buy from the same auctions we do." Then he described a color code on the bumpers of auction cars that characterized their past history. Then he noticed I was becoming very interested, caught himself, and he, too, got lock jaw.
So did any non-dealer out there ever buy their 9-5 at one of the big dealer auctions? And can you tell the rest of us outsiders anything about prices and ins and outs? Is it worth the effort for a typical buyer? Just wondering.
