I know guys in SoCal who do exactly that, take retail buyers to the wholesale auction and then charge a fee. It can work. For some folks a non-reconditioned, non-inspected car is no obstacle. For a late model highline car, many are lease returns and have reasonable mileage and are still under warranty so the risk is low. One need only be confident that a casual inspection will discover any hidden bodywork or other cosmetic defect and that any hard defect will be a warranty item.
Having said that auctions are hard core places and I wouldn't risk the family fortune for an auction car. Many pros make lotsa' mistakes and pay too much at auctions, so an amateur could really get nipped, but you'll have a pro with you to help avoid any mistakes hopefully.
