My family used to own a used car lot in CA, and we got most of our inventory this way. SAAB's are a steal at the auction, because of thier steep depreciation and their lack of popularity. If you can find someone who has connections to the internet auction lists, you can get a good idea of whats coming up for sale and what the average price for a certain model/year has been. And of course make sure you are, or go with someone who knows what to look for! Cars from the auction are also trade ins from new car dealers, so you never know what its history is.
I got my 99' V6 for about $5000 below whole sale book in 2006, and it was considered in "good" condition. So yes you can certainly get a good buy, just find the right experienced person to get you in!
