First of all, my 9-5 came from the auction. It needed almost two grand immediately in tires and overdue maintenance. So, just remember that the Saabs at the auction are often lease returns, which people typically don't pamper. And, Saabs seem to be one of those cars that aren't so resistant to neglect as some of the Japanese cars are. Same goes for the dealer trade-ins at the auction. Think about it: would a Saab dealer take a good 9-5 that just came in on trade to the auction? My experience at the dealer was that the problem cars that the mechanics gave a thumbs down were the ones sent to the auction. In that sense, a lease return is a much better option.
You can save a lot of money up front, but you may be getting a car that has not been well maintained. Depending on the year you are looking for, I'd be very wary of buying a four cylinder at the auction. You're not gonna be able to preclude sludge, and if the car has it, you're gonna hope you paid five grand below wholesale!
The best used Saab buy? From an individual with service records. It's worth being patient and spending a little extra ('course, I didn't take my own advice!).
