There is no such thing as a special winter tire for Saab. However, it is very common to have two set of rims and tires. People often buy winter tires and wheels package for two reasons.
1. The majority of people run smaller winter tires (i.e. 16" vs 17") for better traction. If your snow tire is smaller, you will need a new set of rims.
2. No need to remount and rebalance tires every spring and winter. Or if you have expensive aftermarket wheel, you don't want to expose those to salt and snow.
As for $900, it sounds about right from the dealer if the rims are alloy type.
