in my car for that reason. In Arizona, the streets run north, east, west, and south, and it's very easy to learn where to go with their numbering system. In Connecticut and Pennsylvania, it's impossible to know where you are going unless you either have a map or the sun's out and you know the approximate location in terms of direction, and, even then you're going to get lost. The streets can include many turns and generally the street you are on is never marked (the side streets are marked). Also, the same street can have many different names (I drive one that has three different names for it in the space of about 5 miles). What looks like a Y on a map can actually look like a turn to you or perhaps not look anything like a Y. For instance, I drive a route that looks on the map like you go straight to go to route A and have to take a left to go to route B. Actually, you go straight to go to route B and must take a hard right (very hard, as in 90 degrees) to go to route A. If you're trying to get to route A and you follow the map, you'll be on the wrong street. And, you won't know it for a while because the street itself isn't marked. A compass should help because these two routes do diverge somewhat.
Plus, in the winter, it's dark when I go to work and dark when I return. If I go anywhere after work, I'm trying to find a location in the dark, when the sun is of no use for travel. I don't think I'm the only one who gets lost, as there are always people outside our house that stop and read a map before continuing again.
