Thanks for the tips. Didn't expect such a conversation! For the record, I've owned an '02 9-5 linear (w/5-speed auto) and a '94 900 S V6 auto and an '83 900T so I'm pretty well schooled on the 9-5 maintenance. Agree on the pre-purchase inspection and check for sludge; it's a must.
One reason to get an auto trans is that they're somewhat hard to find without! At least around here. Ceteris paribus, my preference is a 5-speed.
For my needs (commuter car), Aero is "cool" but not necessary and I'd be OK with another linear. Beats the hell out of the crappy old minivan I'm driving with right now. (Our '02 9-5 was totaled a few months ago.)
