If you have any handsfree kit (as opposed to my cheap way out) that put out any kind of mute signal on its own wire, there will be a way, using relays typically, to make that signal connect the car's mute wire to ground. For example, if your handsfree kit puts out +12V on it's mute wire, hook up the +12V on one lead of the coil side on a 12V relay, and ground on the other (watch polarity). On the switched side, hook up ground on one lead and the car's mute wire on the other.
It is the phone manufacturer's fault if their handfree kit can't mute the radio with minimal tinkering. Honestly, what else is Saab going to offer? If your phone can't tell the car that it's being used, how is the car going to know? I was rather impressed with the thought that Saab put into their handsfree system; even the microphone has both high and low level connections.
Anyway, I guess my point is that if your phone can put out a signal that it is being used, you can get the car to respond appropriately with a little thought (and maybe some soldering).
Good luck.
