many cars use timing belts... ... so it should be common knowledge that they require changing. we are fairly spoiled with saabs and the timing chains... VW/Audi, most American and Japanese cars are belts... in any car if the belt goes, havoc will occur... so it's pretty hard to fault Saab for releasing a V6 with a belt instead of a chain... and you know, I bet the folks at Saab would have liked to have fit a chain, but I bet there were limitations on how much modification they could do to the engine... isn't the V6 in the 9-3ss Aero a chain drive? I'm pretty sure it is... so that might be right up your alley vvack: a big fast saab engine with a chain! (though not a whole lot of room to work under the hood)...
The advantage of the V6 vs the 4 in the 9-5 is the sludge avoidance imho, and the advantage of the 9-5 V6 vs prior Saab V6's is that this one is turbocharged (albeit lightly)... The reason I wouldn't get a v6 in a 9-5 is concern re parts availability and cost - many parts are different, and they stopped making the V6 a decade ago (and even then in smaller numbers than the 4's) so there may be issues for parts that are not common to either the 4's or other GM vehicles... that was my indy's reason for avoiding them... however, there are folks here (eg Larry West) who know the V6 9-5 inside and out and enjoy them thoroughly... as a result there is a ton of good advice in that regard on this bb... of the older cars, they might be the safer bet (vs sludge), though the cost of immediately doing timing belt + pulleys (on a car with unknown history) is probably equivalent to the cost of immediately dropping the pan, pcv6, etc etc on a 4 with unknown history... imho, with all the cars heavily depreciated at this point, my advice to Bob would be to look for a 2004+ car with a high pressure turbo (which was most of them) with the best history/condition you can find for the $...
anyway, that's my 2 cents on it...
