In 2011 I "laid to rest" three 9-5 v6 vehicles and in 2012 it was four v6. All but one were first time clients with a vehicle tow in. The one who was an existing client was a reactive not proactive service and repair type. A vehicle is only as good as the mechanic and owner of the vehicle allow it to be. The mechanic may know what to replace before it fails (ie timing belt etc, alternator, engine oil cooler assembly, wp, fuel pump, serp belt idlers etc) but if the owner is not willing to pay for the repairs it gets rolled back out the door and on the road again. Same thing as an owner who wants to get everything done but the mechanic has no clue where to start.
Just finished up an early '99 9-5 v6 today 132k miles (vin -000861). Vehicle was towed in for smoke under the hood and overheating w coolant loss. Found leaking waterpump, timing belt and components needing replacement, VCGs, a failed oil cooler (slightly). Replaced thermostat, temp sensor, plugs, SPS ECM, cam and crank seals, VCGs w bolt seals, WP, serp belt and tensioner and all timing components. For $2280 she is back on the road with an engine that's good for another 60k miles. Used the updated stainless oil cooler as well. She paid $2900 for the vehicle 6 months ago, but said what else is she going to get with that money since hers would be worth close to scrap value if unrepaired.
In contrast, in 2011 four and five in 2012 B2X5s were laid to rest from excessive sludge oil starvation problems. Half were existing clients. There are very limited things that can be replaced once an engine is run with low oil pressure, if there is not a hole out the front of the block from a snapped rod. $1600ish for a used engine assembly, plus going though it (HG, oil pickup, seals, chain, guides, sender, PCV system etc), plus mounts, labor, incidentals, maybe a clutch throws it up around $3600-4000.
Have had the valve covers off 3.0L vehicles that have far more dirt on the steering wheel and shifter than in the engine from poor service intervals. The 3.0L does not sludge at all in my experience. Only once had a pan off, looked just as Anders photo does. Zero buildup.
I enjoy the work as much as the next guy but don't feel right making a repair of that amount $$$ on these older 9-3s or 9-5s when you can just go out and buy a whole used vehicle and use your old as a parts car if desired.
