the pan is much stronger. A jack alone might push up the middle of the pan. I usually use a scrap 2x10 atop a small scissors jack, but 3/4" plywood would probably work as well. As saabsince93 pointed out, you are just supporting part of the engine weight, probably 100-200 Lbs or so. The rest of the car is supported by other jacks, but don't lower them until the engine is secure in it's own mounts and the extra jack removed!
