I think it depends on how knowledgeable one is and how one maintains the car. If you do 5k 0w40 mobil 1 oil changes, pcv#6 (and in your case clean the pan/screen), do the serp belt and pulleys every 60k, etc... you will go a long way to not getting big hits... that said, it is a 12 year old car so it will have stuff fail from time to time and it won't be perfect, but it still is a good car to drive + safe... It's a heck of a lot less of a money pit than having a car payment (or it should be anyway)! Your 9-5 is basically worthless to sell, so I don't see why you would do that other than to trade one set of problems for a different set of problems, or a car payment. Newer 9-5's got more things sorted out, but it's not like the 2001 is a bad car... most of the issues are resolvable, and fwiw, I think the early year cars are the best looking!
There's some other basic maintenance that one should do on any car (fluids etc), and I'd replace the vacuum hoses if they are original (euro hoses biodegrade, so replace with silicone)... cheap and easy insurance. There's a few cheap parts I'd stock up on to have on hand (eg cps), and some more costly ones (dic)... the more you can do yourself with the help of this website and a wis and some tools, the cheaper and more rewarding your ownership will be. At least it's worked that way for me!
good luck!
