Our '05 9-5 also has the tinier fuel filter outside the tank, and I have no record of its replacement, so it is time to do it.
I think it is still located in the same place as on our '99 instead of inside the tank. I have a set of the Lisle quick disconnect tools, and I hope that will be the main difference between the old and new installs. Would still be interested in someone confirming that it's not much harder than on the older cars.

P.S. On Stephen's topic of the drop-the-tank style filter and pump: I agree that I liked it better having them separate. But I have owned 4 cars with the in-tank setup so far - one w 56K is fine, one traded at 112K fine, one at 262K traded was fine, and one totaled at 317K was fine. Those happened to all be Honda/Acura products, but that record of no maintenance needed is not a shabby performance for a design change. The first of those was a 2000 Honda van and the parts guy looked at me funny when I wanted a fuel filter at 60K for preventive maintenance . . . he showed me where it was located, and I decided to wait a while, and I sold the car before the filter or pump gave any problem.
