I think '06 was the first year of the in-tank filter. All I know of the "click to fit" filters is that '02 has the banjo bolts. I know Bob Lutz had a cow when the 9-3SS was released ('03) b/c it used non-GM stuff (mainly the radio and Nav) and the (short wheelbase) CV reinforcement strategy was not compatible with the (long wheelbase) Pontiac G6CV. I'm guessing that there was an official audit after that and high-expense items (like bolt-on fuel filters) were purged.
The in-tank filter was an EPA requirement, given the click-on fuel filter. Wouldn't have been with the banjo bolts.
