That makes sense, Boomer. My sensor did something similar a summer or two ago and fixing it made the system work better. I recall reading somewhere that if that sensor is not sending a signal, the ACC assumes the outside temperature is (very) low and defaults to a heating mode.
It is located in the lower front grill, dead center right below the licence plate (below the bumper, above the air dam).
Its easy to change and check the wiring, especially if you loosen the skid guard to make access easier.
In my case, I replaced the sensor, but also noticed that age had caught up with the wiring harness and one of the wires was exposed. I cleaned that up and all has been great since. Issue was probably just the wire, but I figured I'd just replace both.
