The McKay hose set-up is not imperative for higher reliability. Others have documented on this board to simply disconnect and plug the vacuum lines to the bypass valve so that it never actuates! There are sharp features inside the valve that slice the diaphragm and then result in leaks. If the valve never actuates, it's not a problem. I disconnected mine when I got the car. We're north of 165,000 miles on what I believe is the original valve (bought the car with 98k on it).
