Yes, the fact that the boost needle went all the way into the red zone was a clue that the pressure was too high on the sensor, whether on the manifold or on the air deliver pipe, but I did not put together the reason.
As I started to remove the air delivery pipe from the top of the throttle body, I found it hadn't been tightened (by me). I tightened it. I also tightened the intercooler hose on the other end of the air deliver pipe.
It behaved very nicely on the first test ride. No codes, no funny boost gauge behavior. The engine was warm so I stepped on the pedal to see turbo response. Got a pop, knew what is was, idled home. Sure enough I didn't tighten the clamp to the throttle body tightly enough. I am afraid of cracking the plastic. While the engine is cooling, I am going across town to see if I can find a top throttle body o-ring. Then I will crank the air delivery tube tightly at both ends and drive happily ever after.
Thanks for your help and I hope my experience helps someone.
By the way, the throttle body gasket from Oreillys is a Mahle, says OE quality and has a label that it is made in China and cost $1.99 with free shipping to my local store.
