Incandescent bulbs don't care about polarity, or where the current enters, and where it leaves.
LEDs, on the other hand, only work with current flowing in one direction. One side of the LED must see the +12v (hot), the other must see ground.
For bayonet bulbs, polarity is fixed. Hot and ground are always in the same place.
For wedge bulbs, you need to get the polarity of the LED replacement right. If the LED does not turn on when installed & activated, remove it, turn the base 180 degrees, and reinsert.
Had to do this on my 2002 9-5 for the City (globe) lights, and license plate lights. They all work perfectly.
