Lots of good comments here guys, thanks.
I've always bought my cars used, mainly due to depreciation, so I'm fine waiting. But that assumes there will be a used car that I want when I need one. I wouldn't say I "require" a manual, but that's what I want, so that makes the choices very slim.
Leasing always seemed like a bad idea to me. I like to buy cars and keep them for a while, and I enjoy fixing things if/when they break. Yes that can cause headaches, but the 9-5 so far hasn't left me stranded, and other than the limp home mode hasn't done anything I couldn't work around. Is trying to deal with any repairs, while at the same time saving tons of money on car payments and whatnot, worth it? I guess that's the question. But like Steve pointed out, you could have a new car in the shop anyway, and that would also be a pain.
I agree it's hard to find a car that is a competent replacement for a 9-5. There really isn't anything like it out there, which is part of the reason I want to keep mine. So I think in the end I'll hold off on buying, especially a new car.
