There was definitely a time (maybe 2010 or so?) when DICs were simply not available. In the records I got with my current one-previous-owner 9-5 is a service ticket that indicates that the trouble code for which it was brought in requires a new DIC, but none are currently available. There's another ticket for a month later where it was brought in and the dealer replaced the DIC with an aftermarket. And then about a year later, brought in again, and DIC replaced with a SEM--which is what was in there when I bought the car 5 years ago.
Even now, if you're on a road trip, you'd better take an extra DIC with you. It's not that they fail all that often, but if it does, you won't be getting one at the local auto parts store.
