I have to wonder if he even read the brochure. Check out some of the gaffes in the "Pros and Cons" section:
"the fake wood trim is rather bland."
Um...that's *real* wood.
"The instruments are easy to read, but the sleep mode (simplified instructions in the case of an emergency) is rather useless."
"Sleep mode?" Um...do you mean Night Panel? I think the author must have been in sleep mode when he wrote this review (I hope he didn't sleep during the test drive too, but I wonder.)
"The base 4-cylinder engine provides average acceleration, and many less expensive cars will outperform it."
Um...DUH. If you define "average" to be the mean, then half the cars in existence will accelerate faster, while half will accelerate slower. In other words, this is a completely meaningless statement. Lots of MORE EXPENSIVE cars will not perform as well as the Saab 9.5, but he didn't say that.
"Steering: It is not particularly quick, and the high level of assistance makes it light and sensitive. In short, it requires constant attention."
I'd hate to think that some drivers *don't* give constant attention to where they're steering their cars! This guy has driven too many American-made float-mobiles, IMHO.
"The front armrests are not practical."
Who cares? I keep both hands on the wheel when I drive, thank you very much.
"Despite its extensive list of standard equipment and particular content, the 9-5 is nevertheless too expensive to purchase and maintain.""
Huh? "Too expensive" by who's standards? I've spend *zero* on maintainance on my 9-5 so far (nearly 30,000 miles on the clock). I daresay a BMW or Mercedes-Benz is more expensive to maintain than a Saab, yet I have never before heard an automotive journalist declare one of them "too expensive to purchase and maintain." Obviously, a great many of us manage to do so, and without putting ourselves in the poorhouse. Give me a break; this is simply biased reporting, nothing more.
"Because of its high price and exotic nature, the 9-5 costs more than other models in its category to insure."
Again, HUH? The 9-5 costs less to insure than most of the vehicles listed as competitors. "Exotic nature?" He needs to get out more.
"The 9-5 has yet to be recalled, but owners still complain of the brakes, automatic transmission, climate control system and wipers."
What owners don't complain about something? Is this guy totally naive, or just trying to make the Saab sound as unattractive as he can?
"The 9-5 loses its resale value more quickly than comparable models"
So what? In my mind, this translates into "used cars are a bargain!" And yes, I bought my 9-5 used (and took advantage of the extended warranty Saab offered).
"dealerships are hard to find"
Mine is right down the street. Never mind the fact that once out of warranty, you're better off taking your car to a good indy mechanic. There are lots of people who specialize in Saabs.
