1) can he already drive? I found it quite daunting to teach both at the same time. Once one is a competent driver and can concentrate on learning the clutch, it gets easier. Alternatively, get somewhere - uhm, like a church parking lot - where driving the car isn't an issue, just making it start and stop.
2) with a modern car and its automatic idle speed control, forget the gas at first - just concentrate on being able to sense the friction point, then let the clutch out slowly, slowly, slowly without killing the engine. ONce that's mastered, then go on to clutch and gas together.
3) Classroom - the concept of torque versus engine speed, with torque reaching zero before engine speed, is not intuitive, nor is it universal. Steam engines and electric motors produce max torque at stall. Jet turbines are worse than piston engines
4) do let me know what works .... I'm likely to be trying that again myself real soon now...
