Increasing the preset volume won't increase the startup volume beyond where you had it when you shut the car off. In other words, if you always shut the car off with the volume set at "12", a preset of 9 will return it to 9 at startup, but a preset of 20 will leave it at 12.
You *do* get blasted while you're making the change.
Teh issue is that the preset appears to do more than just reset the volume level: it seems to limit how much amplifier gain there is available to the system. e.g., If, on your home stereo, you had a separate preamp and amp, and the amp had an input level control, you'd want to set that input level to allow you to access the amp's full output range (just short of clipping). The Saab system behaves similarly. At the factory setting, we only access a portion of the amp's output. The difference is noticeable in the bass response.
Play with it--it costs nothing and you may be surprised at the improvement in the "fullness" of the sound. If that's not enough, then it's off to the aftermarket boys for additional amp(s) and probably real, sealed subwoofers. The head unit, fortunately, is a good one.
