Most depreciation comparisons have to use the MSRP as a starting point. Some cars almost always sell for MSRP and some almost always sell for much less. I look at the dollars I would be losing not the depreciation based on MSRP. Saabs which sell for invoice will always look worse than a Mercedes or BMW that sell for MSRP. But you can lose $20K on any of these brands in a couple years and its the dollars that I worry about.
Regarding leasing vs. owning: I have concluded after leasing four vehicles and buying about twice that many, that unless you are going to own the car for about 7 years, leasing is a much better way to go. I would never buy a car again if I was going to keep it just five years. The negatives of greater interest rate to buy, larger downpayment, larger monthly payment, car going out of warranty and resale just make buying very unattractive. Best advice is to lease for three years where interest rates are best and car is always under warranty. Put as little down as you can and invest the money you would have spent on a downpayment. If you really like the car and want to buy it at the end of the lease, sometimes you can offer much less than the residual and get a deal.
