I suspect that this is true for most places. Here in Colorado however the dealer has seen more than a couple 9-5's suffer destruction of the number 1 and 4 pistons as a result of severe knocking. They said they were mostly towed down from I-70 in the mountains.
For those of you unfamiliar, I-70 west of Denver climbs from 5,500 feet to a bit over 11,000 feet in a distance of about 40 miles, with a couple pretty steep sections for an Interstate highway. The service manager said that fuel tests on these vehicles usually showed regular fuel was used. To compound the problem regular fuel in Colorado is 85 octane, premium is usually 91 octane. This is usually fine for normally aspirated engines at our altitude. As I understand it however the turbo essentially charges the system so operating parameters are more like those at sea level. They speculate that the knock sensor/prevention system in the engine can't sufficiently retard the ignition to prevent knocking and it destroys the engine. The parts guys and the service folks were unanimous here in recommending nothing but premium for my 2.3 lpt.
As an aside, I test drove two 9-5's from this dealer before my purchase. One had 7 miles on it, I filled it with premium and it ran fine for the 150 miles I drove. The other was used with about 3500 miles on it. I didn't fuel it myself but it would knock quite easily. I had been considering purchasing one of the rental units until I realised that most of those see nothing but cheap fuel.
As always ymmv, especially near sea level.
