Since getting my 9-5 SE about a month ago, I ran the first couple of weeks on nothing but premium (93 octane), then I changed to the mid grade of 89 octane to check out the difference, if any.
Although the seat of the pants feel seems like it has a bit less snap, the mileage has actually increased. Based upon odometer readings and gas station pumps, I'm now getting ~25mpg commuting and ~30 mpg highway which is 2-3 mpg than I did with premium.
I also started running the 89 octane in my motorcycle (which also calls for premium by the manufacturer) and had the same results.
I've had no pinging in either engine, but will continue to listen carefully, just in case. Seems to me there have been lots of discussions about this (kind of like motor oil and tyres), but it also seems that the bottom line is that you can almost run what you want and decide for yourself without worrying about trashing an engine along the way.
