I agree with you, Russ, on this one. IMO except for 1) the hottest months, 2) high altitude driving, and 3) competition driving, 'premium' gas is a waste.
Saab knock control is very good, and in my Aero and 9000T I run 'high test' only during the hot months - June through mid-September, and then the cheapest stuff I can find the rest of the year. I would increase the use of higher octane gas if I drove at high elevations, but I'm at sea level.
Quite often so-called 'premium' gas actually has a lower energy content because of the additives that have been used to increase the temperature where spontaneous combustion (knock) occurs. This is even more often the case in the summer months in the US because of the efforts to control regional air quality through blending in even more additives. The quality of gasoline during the summer months in the USA is not very good, and because of the regional requirements most brand names mean very little - there is a great deal of inter-brand buying and selling before it gets to the pumps. Long gone are the days of Amoco unleaded, which truly was a premium gas.
The oil industry has kept up the image of premium gas somehow being better or having higher energy content. They sell a lot more at a higher price that way. After all, if it costs more, it must be better, right? Actually it's usually just the same stuff as the regular with low energy additives blended in to raise the ignition point.
