This is kind of a confusing problem to explain, but I will give it a try:
I bought a used 92 900S in early 1997 (47K miles). After having the car for a couple of months (2K miles), the 'antilock' light started coming on intermittently. I took it to the dealer to have it looked at, and they said that there weren't any codes to be found (maybe because while they had it the light never came on), but they did replace some major? parts since it was still apparently under warranty (but it still cost me around $300 for labor). The light went away for a week or two, but it has been back to stay ever since.
However, sometimes after driving the car for 20 minutes (or up to 2 hours), the light will mysteriously turn off......sometimes it stays off until the car is turned off and started again, sometimes it stays off only for 5 minutes. In these cases, when it comes back on, it doesn't always light up very bright right away - it sort of 'fades in' (gets gradually brighter).
Also, sometimes the light will be on when the car is started and remain on till it is turned off (this happens MOST of the time).
As stated in the owner's manual, when the light is on the ABS is not functional (I've tested it on snow, ice, and rainsoaked roads). And when it is off, I find that the ABS system works just fine.
Anyone have any ideas where I can start looking for a solution myself? I am tired of bringing it into the dealer and shelling out $$$$ just for them to tell me that they can't tell me what the problem is - but if i want to start by replacing the ECU and all of the major brake components they will be happy to do so.
Could it be a relay? Fluid levels? I just don't know where to start....
And I would really like to resolve this problem before putting the car up for sale.
Thanks,
Aaron
