If just the Antilock light is coming on, my first suspicion is a bad wheel sensor.

If the pressure in the ABS system is low (problems with ABS pump and/or accumulator), you should get BOTH the Antilock AND BRAKE FLUID lights. If the Brake Fluid light only comes on for a few seconds at startup with a cold car, then the pressures are probably OK. What is more, if you are getting normal brake pedal feel, your pressures are probably OK, because the same hydraulic accumulator for the ABS also provides brake boost.

The most common reason for the ABS light is a bad ABS sensor. (or so said John Moss at the technical session mentioned below). Each wheel has an ABS sensor mounted in the wheel hub. Common sensor faults are either a problem internal to the sensor itself, or to the wire from the sensor to the ABS box. The wire from the sensor to a connector in the engine compartment is a single unit, and it can't be fixed - just replace it. On startup, the ABS system measures the resistance and signal from each sensor, and if they all aren't within a certain tolerance of each other, the ABS light comes on, and ABS is disabled. It's possible that you have one sensor that is just on the hairy edge of that tolerance. Sometimes it's over the edge, and the ABS light is on. Other times it's OK, and the light is off.

First off, make sure the connector to the ABS controller is seated properly. Pull it off and stick it back on. Next, trace the wires from the wheel sensors, and make sure their connectors are properly seated in the harness. Inspect the wires for any signs of kinks or fraying. Replace any sensor that looks suspicious.

As to determining which sensor (if it is a sensor) is bad, you really need the codes from the ABS box to tell that.

I would also recommend that you make sure the ground connection(s) to the ABS box are good - a bad ground would cause these problems. The Bentley manual shows all the wiring and grounding points.

Good luck!
