Bruce,
I just rebuilt the trans in my '88. Definetly get the Transmission manual from Saab, its $17. Haynes manual is ok. The Bently 8v manual doesn't cover trans rebuild at all, haven't seen the 16v manual. I bought most of my parts from Sobstory, which is 25 miles from me. The best prices I could find, great service, too. I replaced all the bearings with SKF bearings, new syncro rings, Scan tech gaskets, a $40 used reverse gear, and about $60 worth of stuff from the Saab dealer. Total cost was $525.
Replacing the pinion bearings is a bear. A dealer or shop will do it for about $75. I did it myself, only took me about two days. ;)
You'll also need a press, a pair of bearing separator plates ($20 Harbor Freight), and something to hold the main (pinion) shaft in the vise while you torque the heck out of it to get the proper preload. I used an old syncro hub, which is splined on the ID to hold the shaft, and ground two flats on the OD to clamp it in the vise.
Take your time and measure carefully. It's not too difficult.
