I am a SAAB newbie having purchased my neighbor's '85 900T 16V 3dr for a mere $400 needing lots of love. I know he had the car a year and did NO work to it at all. I doubt he even changed the oil. It never failed him till the end when the brakes wore out and the muffler fell off. His maint. costs for 1 year = $0. Since I've owned it it has been a joy to drive. It cost me a few hundred to fix the brakes and exhaust as I went with new calipers and rotors and replaced the brake hoses while I was at it. Then I let a friend borrow it for a week and the clutch went on him. Easiest front drive clutch in the world. Very impressed with the ease of service of the clutch in these cars. Upon dissassembly I discovered that my clutch was never disengaging fully which I'm sure lead to it wearing out prematurely at only 120K miles.

Now these parts are designed to wear out eventually and will eventually go on any car, honda or SAAB. Considering the sketchy repair history of my car, I would say it has held up admirably. I typically drive big V8 american RWD cars, and also own a '65 Chevelle Malibu Conv't. The SAAB gets great mileage, 26-30 mpg. So do hondas. The SAAB is however much cooler than any Honda and much more fun to drive. I'm very happy with it.

A suggestion, why not get a honda and a SAAB? Drive the SAAB when you want to have fun and drive the honda when it's crappy out. Keep a tally of which costs more to fix, you may be surprised.
