For what it's worth, I had to replace the head gasket on a '92 900S a few months ago. I scanned the head and a couple of valves after the valve job. This is what good parts should look like.
http://www.lifenet.com/patrick/saabvalves.jpg I had the intake valves done up with a 30 degree back cut while they were in the machine shop.
http://www.lifenet.com/patrick/saabhead.jpg I mean it when I wrote that I scanned the head. I put it on my flat bed scanner. Only two chambers fit at at time. :) The area filled with epoxy is visible toward the bottom of the picture, between the two chambers.
I got the valve job and refacing done, with new valve seals, for a bit under $200, but if you're reeeaaaally tight on cash, you could probably get a noticable improvement in power just by knocking all the carbon out of the ports and chamber, cleaning up the valves on a wire wheel, and lapping them in before putting the head back in place.
Or you could just clean up the gasket surfaces, fill in the eroded parts with epoxy (I'm kind of fond of Devcon aluminum putty) and put a new gasket in there and it'd probably work just fine, too. :)
