Congrats on the succesful r&r! There's been a longstanding debate as to whether or not to remove the tranny from the top or bottom. Most (remember: MOST isn't the same as BEST) opinions prefer the top.
How much stuff did you have to remove from the underside of the car?
And as far as "I did not do that much in the way of measurement because I did not have the specialty tools, but I imagine that one would need them in other rebuilds."- I hope that you have LOTS of experience with trannies...
