Dear Saab Enthusiasts,
I had a comment about special tools for measurement purposes. I do not own any special tools manufactured for Saab. I wish I did and would buy them if I absolutely required them. I actually measured two things during the tranny rebuild.
First I measured the torque on the pinion bearing setup with an inch pound torque wrench, and secondly the distance from the pinion bearing center bolt to the top of the housing at the clutch end. This measurement was actually greater than specifications and theoretically was wrong but I did not have additional shims at my immediate disposal. I couldn't measure the distance from the pinion bearing to the top of the differential housing because it required a specialty tool. Somehow the thing seems to run.
If you are thinking of doing your own work then I say proceed, get the Official Saab manual, and the Haynes(it has pictures that the Saab manual does not), give yourself plenty of time(i would say a week for the first timer) and above all take your time, be meticulous with every detail(like when rebuilding a synchro there is a wrong way and right way just ask me how I know) and have patience!
