Steven,
Hi! Basically I had a pinion bearing whine, the bearing race was really chewed up. The only other worn item visible was the small reverse gear and the reverse gears on the main output shaft. I basically ground down the teeth and re-installed. I replaced all the synchro's, pinion bearings, shift forks, and replaced one of the two roller bearings(the needle bearings in the layshaft were different then the bearings that were sent to me, so unfortunately I put back in the original bearings). I would probably not haver installed all these parts if I hadnn't already bought them ahead of time because my car shifted perfectly. I think that if I would have had a catastrophic breakdown like you mentioned I would definitely acquire a tranny from a junkyard(or used parts from someone) and if it was 88 or older I would retrofit the pinion with a larger one from say Saab performance parts on the internet. Cheaper to mix and match then to have to purchase all the gears new!
Sounds as if you are really experienced, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Sincerely,
Vitas
