I have an '85 900 Saab hatchback turbo. I love it. At the advise of one of my "wise" friends who told me I was wasting my money putting expensive, high octane Shell gasoline into my Saab, I decided to try using the Costco brand high octane gas just one time and then evaluating performance.
What happened, according to my mechanic, is that the fuel injectors got stuck open (supposedly from the "dirty" gas), which caused too much gas to inject into the catalytic (sp?) converter, which promptly caught on fire, which melted the wiring under my ignition box. He (my mechanic) said that he could repair the whole thing for me (4 new fuel injectors + wiring) for $1500. Since I love my car and feel that it still has a lot of life in it, I went ahead and authorized the repair.
When the above mentioned repairs had been completed, my mechanic said that the car wasn't running yet and that the harness needed to be replaced as well :( He said that it is impossible to get used 85 harnesses so he has advised me to get a new one and have him install it. He quoted me an additional $1000 for a new harness and then whatever the labor costs will be to install it. So my bill will probably be between $2500 and $3000.
I read all the posts I could find on this bill board about 85 harnesses and from those I got that you could possibly rewire the 85 to accept an 86 harness and that the 85 harness was inferior in some way to the 86 one.
I am not a mechanic, I really don't know what I am doing here, and I need some serious advice before I authorize any more to be done on my car. I looked up the Kelly's bb value for my car and it is $2000.
What I am seeking here is some advice as to what I should do. Does anyone know where I might get a used 85 harness, should I ask the mechanic to rewire and put in an 86 harness (new or used?). Should I not fix the car and spend the money on buying another newer used 900? Any advice or educating anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated. (I am strapped for cash, btw, so I need to be as economical as possible.) Is there anyone out there who knows what they are doing and who could help me do this work for less than what the mechanic has quoted?)
Thanks,
Randi
