Randi,
open your hood and check the valve cover (top of engine), if the valve cover says "16 valve", then that's what you have. Otherwise it is an 8v. I own an '85 SPG (16v) which suffered from the curse of crumbling wiring insulation. This car now has '86/87 wiring thoughout, and I did the job myself. I am not a mechanic.
The expense you incur depends on where you acquire the necessary parts. If you go to a salvage yard where the parts are pulled for you, you'll have to pay the puller his rent money. However, if you have a you-pull-it yard near you and you have or can borrow the tools, you should be able to get everything you need for under $200. After that it is just a matter of investing your time.
Should you plan to go this route, plan on spending 2 days gathering the parts and installing them. If you label all the connections on your present harness, you'll be able to match them with the connection on the new one, thus simplifying the installation. It is not a difficult job, just time consuming. If you're interested in attacking this repair yourself, drop me and email and I'll send you a list of what you'll need to grab along with the wiring.
