1) yuou have an '85 US spec Turbo - this means that it should be an LH 2.2 (not CIS) and is a 16V
2) it appears that you live in CA and the condition could be excellent ('85s around here have all rusted pretty badly by now)
3) I don't buy the 'dirty gas' explanation.
4) stick with this board and we will try to help as best we can. Maybe Cliff Quan (in SF) or someone else on teh board local to you may be able to lend a bit of local assistance.
As the others have said, the disintegrating '85 wiring harness is a known issue to Saab heads. It MAY have been accelerated by a bad heat shield. This sounds like it MAY be quite likely to me. Without seeing it, I cannot say. The heat shield lives above the catalytic converter and keeps the wiring around the ignition switch and tunnel cool. To fix the wiring and not replace the heat shield, if it is in need of replacing, would be irresponsible by the shop IMO. Ordering a NEW '85 harness would not be as cost effective of a solution as getting a used '86 or 87 harness and having that installed. I feel that you have already paid too much to this mechanic and for the 1500 the harness, heat shield should've been replaced and the injectors were all probably fine. I'd suggest to him the other failure scenario and see what he says. Is the shop a Saab specialist? To pay another grand to 1500 would put a LOT of money in this car. Has it been maintained very well with preventive maintenance or just fixing what is broken as it breaks? How is the cooling system? Head gasket? etc... If it is SOLID, it will proabbly be cheaper to fix it than to get another new one. Besides, it is not road worthy as it is and would bring very little to sell. Hope this is helpful...
