Some amp/speaker questions- tuning it (longish)

These are pretty simple questions, but I'm a pretty simple audio guy;
1) My amp has different continuous pwr outputs for differnt Ohm (@ 4 CH configuration)- @ 2 Ohm it's 60W and at 4 Ohm it's 50W- My fronts are 4 Ohm speakers and the rear are 2- does that mean 50 to the front and 60 to the rear?
2) Gain. I've read too much is bad, but also read that you would hear distortion if there was too much- true? I've also read that you should match your output on your stereo with the Volts on the amp- true?
3) I have a "boost" knob- ranges from 0-18 dB. Books says, "BASS BOOST is NOT free! Every 3 dB costs you twice as much in power. Make sure you set the final gains.... after setting the Bass Boost to work best with your subwoofer/enclousure." What does this mean- my JL sub-book has no refernace to recommend dB level!
That's about it- unless someone can point me in the direction of a thorough tuning guide.
I'm just glad it works at this point, but know it has more sound availble- BEFORE I "gain" and "boost" my way to new speakers- any help is greatly needed.
Thanks!
