Timing changed RPM - why?

As previously posted I set the timing for my 1987 900T - I have owned this car for approx 13 years and had never touched the timing mainly because more then one mechanic had advised that if it runs good not to touch it. ***When I put the light on it the timing was set at less then 8 degrees and I set it to 17 degrees. Just came back from a test drive and the car still runs great. HOWEVER before the timing adjustment the car boosted well into the red zone but now it barely touches the red -- ALSO with the less the 8 degree setting it used to idle at 850 RPM - now with just the timing adjustment to 17 degrees it idles at approx 1250 RPM which I will readjust down to 850. ***
