From what I have heard and experienced - (perhaps wrong)advancing timing does not always give you more power -- My Saab 900T for example - with retarded timing and a 3 bar FPR is a screamer - I should say WAS because I now advanced the timing to 17 degrees in the hope that I would get better fuel consumption. The reason I hadn't touched the timing for more then 10 years was because several Saab mechanics had advised not to touch it because as it was, according to them, was the fastests stock Saab they ever drove.
I beleive the reason it used to boost well into the red before advancing the timing was because it was running very rich - with my simple back yard mechanic reasoning, more gas was entering the combustion chamber before the plugs fired and thus keeping things a bit cooler --- BUT I don't know this for certain.
