At the windshield side, you'll notice that there are rollers. When the hood is hit from the front, the hood Does Not Crumple - instead, it rolls up over the windshield - it actually provides some protection against stuff coming in through the windshield.
I unfortunately hit a concrete bridge abuttment at highway speed in my '86 900T. The hood came up over the windshield, and when the car came to a stop, the hood levered forward, still pretty straight. The front of the car was crumpled pretty good. Now, that bridge abuttment was pretty tall, so I'd put it higher than any SUV.
