Betsy,
If the car itself is in nice condition, ie no rust and paint is good, then I would try to get at least $400. Another thing you can do, and I would suggest doing this, is list the car on ebay as a parts car. If you list the car on ebay as a "normal" car, then you have to pay a big charge for listing the car, like $25. But if you list it in the parts section, you can list it for like 25 cents and that way it will be getting visibility for a long time for not much cost.
If you can get the mechanic to buy the car where it is now, then that might be best if youre going to be paying $400 to tow it, then sell it for hopefully that much later (after the trouble of finding a buyer). I would bet though that a mechanic isnt going to want to spend more than about $200.
You know, you can get a tow dolley from Uhaul for well under $100. If you could find someone with a pickup truck or SUV, you could probably get it towed back for less than $400. Just an idea. Also, I would recommend putting a picture online with your advertisement.
