hi,
the clutch master is directly behind/beneath the clutch pedal. you can get to it for a rebuild by removing the clutch pedal and the rod behind it. as before it's about $10, or less. The brake master is directly beneath the resevior for the brake fluid in the engine compartment. In a manual transmission, which we are talking about, there is a fitting on the bottom of that resevior that also supplies fluid to the clutch master (which then goes into the line and ultimately into the slave cylinder at the pressure plate). There is a plastic "fence" internal to the resevior that prevents the loss of fluid for the brake side of the system in the event the clutch side has a leak and drains out. So you should have brakes (given no other issues) even if you clutch gives out.
I believe that rebuilding the brake master requires removing it in the engine compartment. Most times it's easier to purchase an entire unit and that also comes with a new resevior too.
Renewing the clutch slave is a replacement of the unit. Getting it out also usually means taking the pressure plate out too (you can do it alone but somewhat tricky) so, as most mechanics will say, if you are needing a new clutch slave do the entire clutch because the labor is almost the same - you are just paying for the clutch parts (pressure plate, disk, bearing, and resurface the flywheel).
Again, if you have been adding fluid to the system, you are leaking *somewhere* (I know, duh...) and that points to either the slave cylinder or the line. Could be the master but if you've been adding that fluid long the carpets by the clutch and brake pedals would be slimey by now...
Do yourself a favor and do the slave before it fails again as it requires extra effort to get the pressure plate in the correct position to do the deed if you *can't* do it via the clutch pedal.
And if you are purchasing from eEuroparts (good guys) highly suggest you get the Bentley too, I think it's only $39, it's an invaluable resource especially added to the saabnet boards. "a picture is worth a thousand words..." or at least correctly accomplishing the task by the second try...
let us know how you make out...
