I would bet that the pilot bearing has died. The same thing happened on my '89 SPG - it made all sorts of squealing when I started to move in 1st and reverse. When I opened it up, the balls were in the bearing were pretty much powdered, with a crescent of metal hanging out of the side of the unit.
I think that there are two reasons you're not hearing any squeal when you shift into higher gears:
- You're not slipping the clutch as much when you shift into 1st and reverse. When the primary shaft is turning at a different rate than the flywheel, the races of the pilot bearing are turning at the same rate.
- You won't notice the noise as much over engine noise and road noise.
Was the pilot bearing replaced with the clutch?
