It wouldn't make sense to me to keep trying to start it if it has in fact got no compression. Did he give you the numbers? Maybe they're not so bad but he thinks that must be the trouble when it could be something else.
If it has needed a head gasket for a while and has been repeatedly overheated that can do a number on the rings but still cars with somewhat low compression continue to run pretty well for people on here.
Was there a big overheating crisis the last time you drove it, or repeated overheating incidents before that?
If the mechanic wants to get it running for you maybe he would like to post on here with some questions and details. No insult to the guy at all but there's a vast lot of knowledge on here and a lot of free advice from people who have seen everything. A general foreign car mechanic might be a great problem solver but there's a lot that is specific to Saab 900s that he might not know, even if he's worked on a lot of them over the years.
Wish I lived nearer and had some cash, because what you say otherwise about the car makes it appealing.
