Mercon III supplanted Type F in '77 or somewhere around there, and was often put into transmissions that previously specified Type F - all the Cx transmissions, for example. So, "maybe" it's compatible in certain situations. However, Mercon V is barely compatible with Mercon III, and clearly not going to be compatible with Type F.
In the first, finding straight Mercon III in 2011 is probably an impossibility, but I certainly agree with you - Type F is still being made for a reason, and that reason is there are no true substitutes.
Related note, my XR4Ti shipped with a C3 - a transmission originally spec'd for Type F. The XR4Ti specifies Dexron/Mercon ONLY (having been made in '86, post-switch) however the power steering system still specifies Type F. Odd.
